CAMM is pleased to name SPARTAN SLING MFG INC. as our November Member of the Month.
I had the opportunity to speak with Cliff Black, President of SPARTAN SLING MFG INC. and I asked him a few questions.
- What are your goals for 2024?
To hold current accounts and business at the same levels in Windsor and get the new Sarnia branch up and running smoothly and efficiently, with the same level of service and care as the Windsor office.
2. What are you most proud of from 2023?
The crew I have working for me. They have been working very hard, as business has doubled over the past three years. Everything is getting out the door on time, perfectly. I am very proud of that and the opening of the Sarnia branch and the success it is showing already.
3. Three things people should know about your company?
- We operate with integrity and are exceptionally fussy about our products. This goes back to question number one; all products are done perfectly to customer specifications.
- The safety aspect of it. From their website: “We clearly understand our responsibility to protect your employees from physical harm while protecting your company from financial harm.”
- The abilities we have to problem solve for customers.
4. Brief history of your company.
Gerry and Roseann Black started the company, in 1987, and Cliff took control in 1997. Since then, they have expanded what they started. Cliff attributes their success to their customers, and their faith in the service and abilities SPARTAN SLING MFG INC. provides. "We have grown, and I know mom and dad are looking down from heaven thinking 'wow'". Dustin Black is now preparing the future of SPARTAN SLING MFG INC. Between Cliff & Dustin alone, there are over 75 years of hands-on experience in this industry. Cliff started in the industry in 1974.
Since 1987, SPARTAN SLING MFG INC has continued to grow while maintaining the philosophy of 'What is in the best interest of the customer is what is in the best interest of SPARTAN SLING MFG'
5. Something people may not know about your industry or something students coming into the industry should know?
I don't think anyone truly knows about the industry. It is not something people think about.
Students should know companies like mine are a great asset, as we can save companies a lot of money and a lot of grief through the right products. Everywhere from hospitals to graveyards use our products. No matter where you look in the world, even your cell phone, rigging has been used to manufacture it. Everything!
There is no direct training for this industry, other than from the employer teaching new employees, from the ground up. Employees continue learning. SPARTAN SLING INC. has our own program and it takes 5-years to establish a rigging manufacturer and someone that is exceptionally knowledgeable in rigging, fabrication and actual use.
To do this job, you need to know the end users, iron workers and everyone using this stuff. Something as simple as a nylon sling could go anywhere and if you are recommending it to someone, you need to know what they need it to do for them, the weather it will be exposed to etc. There are so many things that tie into what we do. Knowing the end use of the product is critical for production, and proper advising of the customer.
From the website: “Each and every employee (including Cliff & Dustin) begins their career sweeping floors & stocking shelves. All employees visit factories, construction sites, mines and other end user businesses so that they may see & appreciate the products that they produce in the real world working environment. Each & every employee learns the art of sling making and to this day, even Cliff & Dustin can be found in the shop fabricating chain, nylon or wire rope slings for various customers.”
Thank you Cliff Black for taking the time to answer these questions, and for your dedication to CAMM!

Will a lack of skilled workers kill manufacturing in Canada?
How long can manufacturing survive without a deep skilled labour pool?
In a survival situation, it’s important to know the “rule of three.” While the rule is situationally based, it essentially states that you can survive for three minutes without air, three days without water, and three weeks without food.
It begs the question: How long can manufacturing survive without a deep skilled labour pool.

Government incentives: past, present and future— and beyond!
In a period of economic turbulence, government funding tools and well-defined policies are more vital than ever to support innovation and entrepreneurship. Government incentives have long been a key part of economic development policy in Canada. While various factors influence investment decisions — such as the state of the economy and geopolitical circumstances — incentives can sometimes be the difference between adopting and rejecting an investment or project. Recent incentives have focused on a variety of economic development goals, including stimulating investment in green technologies to assist in the transition to a clean economy, increasing the number of women entrepreneurs, and hiring new graduates.
In this policy brief, we examine discretionary government incentives awarded in Canada over the last three years. Not surprisingly, Ontario and Québec topped the list with $2.35 billion and $2.23 billion incentives received between 2019-2021, respectively. The AM&M sector, (including Industrial goods, automotive, consumer goods, aerospace & defence) received approximately $2.13 billion over that period. The question companies should be asking themselves is “are we getting our piece of the pie?”
