Canada to boost immigration processes to fill labour shortages

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada has put forth a plan to fill labour shortages by processing immigration applications at a faster rate.
The statement from Immigration Canada applauded immigrants for continuing to work on the front lines throughout the pandemic in key sectors like health care, transportation and manufacturing.
“Without them, Canada would not have been able to overcome challenges in critical industries and sectors of the economy over the past 2 years. Now, more than ever, immigrants are a key part of our country’s continued success,” the statement read.

Ontario Removing Barriers for Out-of-Province Skilled Workers

The Ontario government will introduce changes that would help workers in over 30 in-demand professions move here with their families while continuing their careers. The changes, if passed, would tackle Ontario’s historic labour shortage – the largest in a generation – by ensuring out-of-province workers can register in their regulated profession or trade within 30 days.
“At a time when our government is building Ontario, it’s never been more important that we attract more workers to fill in-demand jobs,” said Premier Doug Ford. “To do so, we’re cutting red tape to make it easier for skilled professionals from across Canada to get the papers they need to work in Ontario, faster. This move opens more doors for workers to call Ontario home while contributing to our plan to build more roads, bridges, highways, homes and public transit.”

A PSA to Canada's Manufacturers
The business of making things is changing and moving quickly.
Many manufacturing companies in Canada are advanced because they have the strategy, processes, technologies, and people to compete and grow in a dynamic global economy.
The pandemic underlined the importance of having made-in-Canada solutions in biomanufacturing and health care, as well as in electric vehicles, hydrogen, clean tech, automation, and robotics, along with the capabilities required to solve and address some of the world’s biggest challenges.
We need products that save lives, address climate change, and solve food insecurity. And we need to be able to manufacture them in Canada.

Transition from the Ontario College of Trades to Skilled Trades Ontario

The Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021 has resulted in significant changes to the trades registration system in Ontario. One of the biggest changes is that Skilled Trades Ontario will not be operating on a membership model. To practice a compulsory trade in Ontario you will need to have a valid Registered Training Agreement, Provisional Certificate of Qualification or Certificate of Qualification. Only the information for individuals practicing compulsory trades will appear on the Skilled Trades Ontario Public Register, and renewals will only be required for Certificates of Qualification in compulsory trades. Skilled Trades Ontario will issue Certificates of Qualification in compulsory and non-compulsory trades with exams.

Working for Workers Act, 2022

On February 28, the Ontario government introduced the Working for Workers Act, 2022 that would, if passed:
  • Establish foundational rights and protections for digital platform workers who provide ride-share, delivery, or courier services. This would guarantee them a minimum wage, protection of their tips, the resolution of disputes in Ontario, and protection from reprisals. Learn more.
  • Tackle Ontario’s historic labour shortage – the largest in a generation – by ensuring out-of-province workers can register in their regulated profession or trade within 30 days. This would help these workers become registered and find jobs in their field faster so they can contribute to driving Ontario’s economic growth. Learn more.
