St. Clair College Rapid Skills 2020 Micro-Credential

This message is being sent on behalf of Waseem Habash, Vice President, Academic:

With support from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), St. Clair College is currently developing a micro-credential program in automation. A micro-credential program consists of 500 hours or less of classroom/lab instruction, with the goal of providing rapid and specific industry skills. This provides an opportunity for current employees and recently unemployed individuals to upskill or reskill in an area that benefits the ever-changing workforce.

Based on industry feedback and the advancement of manufacturing technologies beyond manual skills, automation has been selected as the subject matter for this micro-credential project. The shift in skilled labour demands presents an opportunity to upskill and reskill those that have been affected by the changing manufacturing environment. This program targets the population of workers affected by this manufacturing shift, particularly in the automotive industry, by providing a short duration, applied learning program, focusing on delivering automation solutions.

The program will begin in September 2020, with a schedule of 16 hours per week (tentatively two evenings and one day on the weekend) for approximately 25 weeks. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, St. Clair College is developing remote training deliverables in parallel to face-to-face training. Upon completion of the training, students (your employees) will receive a statement of achievement from St. Clair College. The College will also elicit feedback from employers and students on the effectiveness of the training.

We are reaching out to you to seek your support on two fronts:

  1. Provide us with input on the curriculum being developed so that it meets industry needs; and,
  2. Determine if you have a need for such a program within your company and, if you would have employees that you would want to be trained.

With the support of the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, there would not be a cost to the employer or employee for the training for employees for this micro-credential project.

Should you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Karen Gill‑Gore, Associate Vice President, Employment and Training Services, at [email protected] or by phone at 519-972-2727, ext. 2232.

We look forward to hearing your ideas and collaborating with you on this venture.

Sincerely,

Waseem Habash
